THE LAND OF DISCONTENT.
Alack and alas for a land I know, Where the sky is dull and gray ; Where never a flower is seen to blow, And only the thistles and briers grow, Where the sun never shines as it shines— oh, no ! On the land across the way. The dreariest place in the world, I ween, Where nothing is good or true ; Where generous people are counted mean, And envy turns every complexion green, No vestige of jollity anywhere seen — I wouldn't live there, would you ? I would rather live in the Torrid Zone, Or the open Polar Sea, Than gloomily dwell in that land alone, Begrudging the things that are not my own, With never a smile, or a pleasant tone, For those that belong to me. Yet, many, ah ! many, live there, they say— • And sad are the days so spent. I cannot imagine what makes them stay Instead of taking themselves away As far. indeed, as they possibly may From the Land of Discontent. —Maud Wyman.
