Fat Sheep. — To-day's entry comprised 1943 crossbreds, representing the various grades of quality. There was, however, a fair proportion of good wether mutton, including several especially prime lots ; as, also, one or two lines of extra heavy ewes. The demand was wholly confined to the requirements of the local buyers, and the comparatively large entry was more than sufficient to meet the same, a dragging sale being the result. In the best sheep the actual decline in values was slight, but light-weight wethers and second-class ewes could only be gu tted at reduced rates. Of merinos there were none to hand. The heaviest and best wethers of the day brought 14s 9d to 15( 9d, but at the latter figure they were extra prime, and consisted of two or three pens only. Really good sheep sold at 13s 6d to 14s; medium to good, 12s 6d to 13s ; prime ewes, 12s 6d to 15s 3d ; a few selected sheep to 16s 9d; others, 8s to lls 6d. — The Mutual Agency Company of New Zealand (Limited) sold : For a client, 30 crossbred ewes at 153 3d, 29 at 13s ; for Mr T. Pigs.— An entry of 57, comprising all classes, changed hands at full values, viz. :— Suckers, 9s to 10s 6d ; slips, 14s to ]7s ; stores, ISs to 21s ; porkers, 25s to 30s ; bacon pigs, 35s to 40s.— The Farmers' Agency Company (Limited) sold 14 suckers for Mr W. Pryde (Mataura), at 9s 6d to 12s 6d.— Wright, Wtephenson, and Co. sold 35 at quotations.
Store Sheep. — There is a good all-round demand for young crossbreds, the inquiry being perhaps more pronounced in North Otago and South Canterbury than in districts south of Dunedin. A fair turnover is, however, taking place in all directions. In fact the prospects as to the satisfactory disposal of sheep for fattening are much more encouraging than they were a month since. Breeding ewes have as jet but little inquiry, but another month will no doubt bring about a change in this respect. The demand for merinos of all classes is also restricted jn the meantime, and buyers are evidently holding back somewhat in anticipation of purchasing at lower rates than those of last season. In wethers, however, a good few lines have changed hands at what must be considered low prices, but in ewes very little has been done. The heavy mortality which has taken place in the " merino country' 1 of the province during the past winter should shortly bring about a demand, and enable a clearance to be made of the surplus sheep of this class at fair prices. Privately and at auction The Mutual Agency Company of New Zealand (Limited) have sold 3000, various classes, at quotations. — The Farmers' Agency Company (Limited) report having sold during the week 5710 as follows :—1740: — 1740 two-tooth crossbred (very good) at 10s 6d, 910 do at 10s 6d, 56 do (small) at 6s lOd, 22 wethers at 12s, 47 crossbred ewes at 83, 165 cull two-tooth crossbreds at 6s Id, 20 crossbred wethers at 10s 3d, 500 extra good crossbred lambs at 10s, 750 two and four-tooth halfbred wethers at 9s 6d, 500 crossbred ewes (aged) at 5s 6d, 1000 fullmouthed merino ewes (aged) at 4s. Store Cattle. — As mentioned last week, the supply of store cattle is much below requirements, and any lots offering are quickly taken up at prices which leave but a small margin for fattening. As is well known, quotations have ruled
the hammer, these, however, brought fairly satisfactory prices.
Land Sale.— The Farmers' Agency Company (Limited) report having sold by auction, at Gore, on Tuesday, for Mr Edward Macauley, tection 17, block XII, Chatton, containing 21)0 acres with improvements thereon, for £1020 cash, to Mr M. Hanley.
Wool. — London cable news of February 7 reports the closing of the series of sales on that date, prices being firm at about par with the opening rates. Wools of medium to good staples were firm, while the best merinos, faulty, and heavy greasy were at par to 5 per cent, below the closing rates for December. The next of the series of Dunediu sales will be held on Thursday, February 22, and consignments for this auction should arrive on Monday, 19th.
Sheepskins. — For some weeks past — that is, since the early wool consignments commenced to come forward, and with these the accumulation of country skins — the weekly catalogues have been of smaller dimensions than usual — this week's sale being no exception Prices, however, continue firm, and for clean pelted, well saved skins, suitable for shipment, there is a keen competition. Other descriptions also bring full market rates, though it evidently pays to give attention to country as well as town skins and to see that they are sent forward in good condition. Country dry crossbreds (inferior to medium) brought Is Gd to 3s 3d ; merinos, Is 3d to 2s ; medium to good crossbreds, 3s to 4s 6d ; superior, 4s 9d to 53 3d ; merinos, to 3s 6d ; green crossbred pelts, Is 2d to Is lOd ; lambskins, Is 3d to 2s 3d. Country lines proportionate rates. Rabbitskins —Supplies are now every week becoming smaller, and the quality of the skins is naturally deteriorating at this season of the year. Making allowance, however, for these disadvantages, there were less buyers present at the sales on Monday than for some time past, and a sharp decline in values took place. Of winter and spring skins there were none on offer, the top price for summer parcels being 7d ; second quality, 5d to 6&d ; Buckers and half-grown, l^d to 3d, though at the latter price the larger proportion consisted of half-grown skins. Hides.— Theie is no change in the hide market as far as prices go, though the quantity coming forward is smaller than hitherto. We repeat last week's quotations, with a tendency to weaken. Tallow.— Of rendered tallow there is very little offering in the local market, but such as comes to hand meets with a ready sale. Of rough fat there is the usual supply, and late ruling rates for the same are easily obtained. Quotations ;— Best rendered mutton tallow, 21s to 22s 6d ; inferior to medium, 14s to 18s ; clean unrendered caul fat, 14s 6d ; other descriptions, 10s 6d to 13s 6d.
for best, £3 5s to £3 10s ; medium, £2 15s to £3 per ton (ex store, sacks weighed in, net). I Chaff. — Consignments to hand being no more than sufficient for requirements, last week'sprices are being fully maintained, best fetching £3 10s to £3 17s 6d ; extra heavy, £4 2s 6d to £17s 6d ; medium, £2 53 to £3 ss ; inferior, £1 10 ato £2 per ton (ex truck, sacks extra, net). Dairy Produce.— Market flat, and no indications of an immediate improvement. Prime dairy-made salt butter, in retail lots, fetches 6id to 7d; medium, 4d to 5d ; factory, 9d to lOd per lb. Factory cheese : Medium size, 4}d to 4}d ; loaf do, 5d to s\d ; dairy-made, 2d to 4d per lb . Flax.— The market is still without any animation, and but little business passing. Late quotations, however, are applicable, which are : For medium to good, £13 10s to £14 10s— extra well dressed a shade more ; inferior (nominally), £10 10s to £12 10s per ton (ex Btore). . like individual reports of Wool, RaVbittkin, or Grain Broker 0 can be inserted in the Daily Titnet mnd Otago Witness at Special Rate*.]
