KAITANGATA.
February 13.— The work of surveying and prospecting for coal is being proceeded with at Frazers under the supervision of Mr Twinning, and we may soon expect to hear of something being done of a substantial nature.
The Harvest. — I understand that harvesting: will be commenced this week in the Wangaloa. district, and from what I can learn the crops promise to be fully up to the average. The crops on this side of the ranges are a little later, and harvest operations will not be commenced hero yet for some time.
Cricket.— A cricket match between the Kaitangata and Balclutha Clubs was played on thelatter's ground on Saturday, when some satisfactory scoring was made, the visitors, however, proving too good for the home team, the scores, for one innings each standing as follows :—Kaitangata 95, Balclutha 61. The visitors wore entertained at dinner, and very much enjoyed the outing. Another match will be played before the close of the season. A match is also arranged for Wednesday between teams from Lovell's Flat and Kaitangata. A concert for the purpose of raising funds for the cricket club is to be held on Friday evening, when a good programme will be presented to the public. Cycling.— The bicycle race from Balclutha to> Kaitangata and back on Saturday morning created a good deal of interest here. As "Demon" will no doubt deal with the matter, however, I need not enter into particulars. Picnic. — The annual picnic of the employees of the Kaitangata Coal Company will be held in Smith's Bush, Stirling, on Saturday, and should the day prove fine there will be a very large attendance, as this picnic is always looked forward to by the residents of Kaitangata. The social under the auspices of the Oddfellows is to be held in M'Govern's Hall on Thursday evening first. Obituary.— One of Kaitangata's early school boys passed away last week in the person of Mr John Johnston, jun., at Gisborne, from typhoid fever. Deceased, who was an engineer, had been resident in Gisborne for some time, and was highly respected by all who knew him. Much sympathy is expressed for his young widow, and his parents, who are well known in the district.
