KELSO.
February 5.— On Saturday afternoon Crs Robertson (Glenkenich riding), Sim (Tapanui riding), Edie (James riding), and a number of the settlers around Kelso assembled at the Railway Hotel to consider the advisability of closing the local traffic bridge and forming a new ford across the Pomahaka. Some tima ago a notice was put up by the county engineer limiting the traffic to 30cwt, but it was stated at the meeting that a six-horse waggon bearing five tons passed over the bridge lately, therefore it was deemed necessary to close the bridge altogether, as the public were in danger of losing their life and property through its use. The meeting was unanimous in condemning the apathy displayed by the ratepayers in not getting up a petition to bring pressure to bear on the powers that be to assist them out of the difficulty. It has since been suggested to me that half the bridge be partitioned oil so as to allow for foot, horse, and sheep traffic only. Social — Ever since Christmas we have had quite a number of social gatherings in this district, the last being given by Mr and Mrs A. Russell to a large number of the young people of the district. Although the night was pitch dark and raining, all who received invitations put in an appearance, and one and all enjoyed themselves to their hearts' content. Mir D. Ferguson proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr and Mrs Russell for their kindness and hospitality. The Weather. — The weather of late has been very changeable, high winds and heavy rains alternating. Some of the heavy crops have been laid fiat, but pasture and turnips have greatly improved. Harvest has commenced, and will be general in a fortnight. Education Board.— The Kelso School Committee voted for the Hon. J. Macgrcgor and Mr Cohen as members of the Education Board, and the Glenkenich Committee for the Hon. J. Macgregor and Mr J. F. M. Fraser.
