H.M.S. LIZARD IN A GALE.

Wellington, February 5. H.M.S. Lizard, which arrived from Mjlford Sound this afternoon, encountered the full force of the N.E. gale on Friday afternoon. At 4 p.m., when the gale was at its height, a heavy sea broke aboard, washing W. Tucker and A. Street, A.B's., off the bowsprit. Measures were at once taken to save them, but Tucker sank before help could be given. A life buoy was thrown to Street, who is a powerful swimmer. He was unable to grasp it, but; managed to secure a lead line, and was hauled on board in almost the last stage of exhaustion. Three other seamen were washed on to tbe upper deck and narrowly escaped going overboard, while a large whaleboat was carried away. At tbe time of the accident the vessel was about 18 miles S.W. of Cape Foulwind. The gale continued with unabated force, and at 3 o'clock on Saturday morning the large whaleboat disappeared overboard. From 8 a.m. the vessel was hove-to for several hours, but the weather moderating she proceeded on her course. Tucker was a native of Devonshire, 24 years old, and had been about seven years in the navy. Considerable damage was done to the deck gear.

The weekly cost of the Wellington Benevolent Home is a fraction under 5s 9d per head.
