CLAIMS NOT WANTED.

Oar contemporary the Tuapeka Times of the 27th January contains a Government advertisement dated the 16th October last, taken from the Gazette of that month, calling for claims in respect of the application to proclaim the Waipori river a sludge channel. This is signed by the Minister, and to it is appended another,, signed by the Warden, calling special attention to the necessity for patting in claims in time. Considering that the Tuapeka Timeß is a goldfields paper, and that goldfields people can have no claims, this is ■ all somewhat superfluous. The claimants would naturally be the people of the distriot into which the river ran — net that from which it flawed. These people are farmers in the Taieri. So far as they are concerned the notice was either hidden in this, to them, foreign newspaper or buried in the Gazette. What object can be served in keeping this notice standing in the Tuapeka Times long after the time for putting, in claims has passed, we cannot even guess. It can hardly atone foi the unfairness of never publishing it at all to those really interested. We do not know whether any claimants failed 60 pat in their claims, nor do we know the exact legal consequence of Bach failure, bat we notice that the Hon. the Premier gave as his answer to the Oamaru deputation,. which went up to complain of the fouling; of the town supply of water, that they were 1 too late, and that Government intended to rely on their lapse.
