FLAX-DRESSING MACHINERY.
We notice that Government offers a bonus, under certain conditions, for flax-dressing machinery. £1750 is offered for an improvement on existing machines, and £250 for a process for utilising waste products. One never knows exactly how of" why such rewards come to be offered, though if they relate to -large and important subjects the State is right in offering them. On the whole we doubt whether there is enough to be gained to render such an invention, in this island at least, worth a heavy subsidy. The industry is a transitory one preliminary to clearing land. We have seen no systematic attempt to cultivate flue for the purpose of manufacturing fibre. It requires good land, and probably good land gives better results in other ways. , On rich land, permanently subject to floods, such as are known in parts of the North Island and in Australia, we believe it would pay to grow flax, and we should not be surprised to see it some day cultivated in Fiji. It would be worth trying on the flooded banks of the Murray and other Victorian rivers. As a rule, however, it mast be regarded as a waste product to be used up as land is brought into cultivation.
