There is a world of grim humour in the Western American, which was well exemplified in an incident I witnessed at an out-of-the-way mining camp saloon in Colorado only this spring.

A sprucely-attired dude sauntered in, and, flinging down a "greenback," said, with a drawl which pronounced his English nationality : "Ah, I'll take a glass of wine, please." Only those familiar with the provision of a Western saloon, with its rank rum, will grasp his offence.

The barkeeper eyed the stranger, and said : "See, here, / Tenderfoot,' you air agoing to drink rum — raw rum ; and (here he fingered his six-shooter significantly) you, air agoing to like it." And he did !
