KAITANGATA.

January 22. — A picnic under the auspices of the Presbyterian Sunday School was held in Smith's Bush last Wednesday, and was very largely attended, the day being all that could be desired. The picnickers left Kaitangata by train at 10.10 a.m., and reached the bush about 11 o'clock, when, after refreshments had been partaken of, various games were indulged in. to the enjoyment of both young and old, the party returning home about 6 o'clock in the evening. Another picnic, under the patronage of the brass band, was held on the beach on the same day, and was fairly well attended. In the evening a dance was held in M'Govern's Hall, when a number of couples " tripped the light fantastic" till an early hour.

Shooting Competition. — The volunteers are busy just now shooting for a handsome : teapot presented by Mr M'Goyern, of the Club Hotel, and from the matches fired Captain liutherford stands to win the prize, and should he be successful it will be a most popular win. School.— The school reopened last Monday, after six weeks' vacation. Some great improvements in the .way of asphalting have been done during the holidays. TELEPiioNE.-^-Some two or three months ago we were led to believe that we were to be connected by telephone and to have a bureau here, but of late I have not heard anything about it. Has the proposal died a natural death, or is it only under turther consideration ? Nothing worse than the latter, I hope. Oddfellows.— l understand that the local Oddfellows purpose holding a social some time during next month. This body has made rapid progress since the formation of the lodge, less than six months ago. Bowling. — A bowling match was played on Thursday last between the Bjilclutha and Kaitangata Clubs on the latter's green. The game all through was very evenly contested, and resulted in a win for the home team by one point. Tea was provided on the green by the Misses Corson, and was thoroughly appreciated by one and 'all of the players. A good deal of interest was taken in the match, judging by the number of spectators on the green during the game.
