THE UNITED STATES TARIFF.

Washington, January 9.
A strong section of the Democrats favour the proposed income tax being abandoned. Senator WHsod, in the coarse of his remarks while introducing the Tariff Bill, accused the Eepublicans of converting an overflowing Treasury into a bankrupt one and recklessly wastiDg 70 million pounds, of which forty millions were spent on pensions, bounties, and the prepayment of interest and principal, He declared that thirty million pounds were lost to revenue by the remission of the duties on tobacco and sugar. The final vote on the bill is fixed for Monday, the 29 0h inst. Nineteen members who were absent without leave were arrested in order to form a quorum.

It is probable that the income tax proposal will be abandoned in order to save the remainder of the Tariff Bill.
London, January 9
President Cleveland and Mr Wilson (ohairman of the Committee of Ways and Means) assured Dr Renwick before he left America that the Democratic party intended to pass a bill providing for the free admission of wool, iron, and coal into the United States, despite the strenuous opposition which is being offered to the measure by the Protectionist paity.
