THE WOOL SALES.

The Farmkhs' Agency Company (Limited) report : — We held our second wool sale on Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. There was an increased attendance of buyers, including some new to this market, and a .very large gathering of growers. The total quantity offered was a little over 9000 bales, of which we catalogued 1013 bales. The selections all round were a decided improvement on those offered at last sale, and we have to compliment some of the growers on the way their wools were got up, by being well skirted and evenly classed. For these lots bidding was very keen ; several brands of lustrous halfbred and crossbred brought over last year's prices. We have also to report an improved demand for merinos, and for pieces and other scouring lots some high prices were paid. The following is the range of prices obtained at our Bale : — Greasy and light half bred, BJd to lOd per lb ; ordinary do, 73d to SJd ; light crossbred, 8d to 9Jd ; heavy do, 6Jd to 7Jd ; dingy do, 6d to 7Jd ; merino, s]d to B}d ; piecee, 5d to 7jd ; bellies, 3Jd to 6Jd ; locks, 2d to4Jd. lent demand experienced for all the wool submitted irrespective of character. Values, however, showed no improvement when compared with prices obtained at the fir3_t sales. Higher prices were secured on this occasion owing to the superiority of the wools offered, and while the demand is much stronger for coarse, lustrous wools, the finer sorts of greasy cross and halfbreds command top prices— lOd being_ reached, which is within id of last season's highest prices. In scoured wools we were successful in securing Is 2Jd for a beautiful line of halfbred. Our catalogue comprised 1100 bales. Sever.il lots were not forward in time to be valued, but will be dealt with at the sales to be held on February 2. Eight hundred bales were sold at prices in almost every instance just covering our values. Reynolds and Co., Stafford street, report as follows :— We held our second sale of the season to-day in the lodge reom upstairs in the Oddfellows' Hall, Rattray street, there being the usual good attendance of both local and foreign buyers. We submitted the largest catalogue we have yet offered, and are pleased to be able to state that we sold nearly every lot at what we can safely term very satisfactory prices. The buyers evinced a keenness throughout to purchase, and this resulted in many lots bringing more, we think, than they would have done at last sale, but, on the whole, we hardly feel justified in reporting any distinct advance, though we axe of opinion that the market is decidedly firm. Top price realised today was lOd per lb. for a superfine lot of halfbred, the same wool realising lOJd last year. Donald Reid and Co. report :— We held our second wool sale of the season's series at the Oddfellows' Hall, Rattray street, Dunedin, on Thursday, January 11, when we submitted a catalogue of 1252 bales, the various descriptions being fairly represented. There was -again a large attendance of buyers, both foreign and local ; the colonial woollen factories were also well represented, and gave substantial assistance to the sales. Bidding throughout the sales was exceedingly animated up to buyers' limits, but we regret that we are not able to quote any advance in values, prices realised being only about on a par with those ruling at our first sale. The full catalogue submitted at the sales comprised some 7291 bales, and nearly the whole of the lots offered were cleared at prices which, considering the prices ruling in London, may on the whole be considered fairly satisfactory. Our catalogue was again made up exclusively of farmers' clip 3, some of which were of good quality, bright in colour, light in condition, and well got up. The prices offered for this class were in several cases rather disappointing, and in consequence some lots had to be passed in. Strong and heavy wools met with a comparatively good sale, and these were pretty well cleared at relatively better values. Of the 1252 bales catalogued by us, 60 bales were passed in (prices offered not being up to valuations), 1137 bales were sold, and 55 baleß did not reach us in time to be valued before the sale. Stronacii Brothers and Morris report having held their second sale of the season's series on Thursday, 11th inst., at the Oddfellows' Hall in Rattray street. The attendance of buyers was exceptionally good, particularly keen competition being a marked feature of the sale. About 7000 bales were submitted, comprising some very choice clips in both merino and coarse wools. The number of bales would probably have reached nearer 10,000 had the weather recently been more favourable for shearing. We cannot say that values, on the whole, showed an advance on those of last sale ; for although higher prices were obtained, the selection of wools was proportionately better. The Mutual Agency Company of New Zealand (Limited) report holding their second wool sale of the season at Oddfellows' Hall, Rattray street, on Thursday, 11th inst. Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report as follows :— We held our second tale for the season this (Thursday) afternoon at the Oddfellows' Hall, Rattray street, the sanie number of buyers attending as at the opening sale. The quantity of wool offered fell considerably short of what passed under the hammer at the corresponding series of sales last year, the cause being clearly attributable to the showery weather prevalent, Avhich has of couise greatly retarded shearing operations and prevented the offering of many clips which it was customary to submit at this series.- The total quantity offered to-day was about 7500 bales, of which our clients contributed 1911 bales, and of these we disposed of 1749 bales at auction. The wools offered to-day included several of the choicest clips of crossbred and merino grown in Otago and southland— notably, in crossbred, Waicola over O, JAB over Cairn, and W over Romarua, portions of which each realised the very satisfactory price of lOd per lb. Biddings throvighout the sales were of the moit spirited character, and prices compared with those current at the opening sale remained unchanged except in the ca3o of the boat crosibreda and halfbreds, which may be quoted a farthing higher. High-class inerino3 such as the Johnston's (of Kaihiku), Watt's (Kaihiku), and Ayson's (Wairepa) were not, owing to American buyers being out of the market this season, in much demand, realising from Id t> Ud per lb less than last year, B'}d being the top price as against up to 101 dl 2 months ago.
