THE MOORS AND THE SPANIARDS.
The Spanish reverses at Melilla, Morocco, are due to the mistake of the Spanish general, Marcello, in underrating the hostility and the fighting powers of the Arabs. At a Cabinet Council in Madrid on Sunday, the 29th October, called by the Queen Regent herself, her Majesty said she considered the time had arrived to appeal to the patriotism of all Spaniards for sacrifices to defend the Spanish honour in Melilla. She asked that all information in regard to affairs there be published, and nothing concealed. Ab the close of the Council the Hadrvz Infantry Rpgiment was reviewed by the Quesn and her children, accompanied by a number of noblemen and generals. Advices received at Madrid on October 31 say that the Moors continue to make desultory attacks on the Spaniph lines. The enemy are busily at work constructing their trenches in spite of the fire from the forts. Tho Arabs ar.d Moors are in fact beskgiDg Melilla, and the Spaniards have all they can do to hold their own. Spain will be forced to send an army if Bhe series to drive out these fighting tribesmen of tho hills. The Sultan Mulley Hassan has ruled in Fedaz and Morocco for 20 years. 110 Ins a well-armed and well-organised army of '10,000 men, and a shrewd military adviser in Oft]''"'" Alan Maclean, a Scotchman with an Alinwi record.
