EDUCATION BOARD.
The Education Board met yesterday. Present : Messrs Borrie (chairman), Ramsay, Fraer, and J. Green and T. S. Mackenzie, M.H.R'r., the Hon. John Macgregor, and Dr Stenhouse. A SCHOOL AT WYLLIE'S CROSSING. A deputation, consisting of Messrs R. M'Kegg, J. M'Ewen, D. Shand, J, Hughes, A. Smith, and John Shore, waited upon the board and requested that a school be erected at Wyllie's Crossing. Another deputation, consisting of Messrs Sniellie, Currie, and Findlay, opposed the application. — After hearing both, sides of the question, the boaid decided to consider the matter at a future date. BROAD BAY SCHOOL Messrs J. Cleanvater and T. M'Lennan waited upon the board as a deputation from Broad Bay School Committee, and asked that a male teacher be appointed instead of a female teacher to fill the place of the present teacher, who is leaving the service.— lt was decided to consider this matter at a future meeting also. KENSINGTON SCHOOL. Messrs Puddy and Clark formed a deputation from the Kensington Committee and asked the board to grant assistance for money expended in improving school ground. — It was decided to ask the deputation to put their request in writing. ALBANY STREET SCHOOL Messrs Barnett, Dickson, and Anderson, representing the Albany street School Committee, asked the board to effect various improvements to the school, amongst which were an addition to the infant school, fitting up of the gymnasium, and asphalting the ground. — It was decided to ask the committee to state their needs in writing and submit them to the board at as early a date as possible. The board resumed in the evening. NOMURA. It was decided to purchase four acres offered by Mr Mealove ia the Ngapara township as a site for a school, and to erect thereon a new residence, and remove the present school buildings to the new site at the earliest possible date. SCHOLARSHIPS. Mr A J. Mayne, of Timaru, wrote asking that Maud Martin, whose parents reside in Timaru, and who had been attending the school in Timaru for the past 15 months, should be allowed to sit for a scholarship offered by the Otago Education Board. — It was decided to consult the board's solicitors in regard to the matter, with the view of seeing if the regulations allowed of the request being granted. It was decided to award bursaries at the Training College for one year to all first-class pupil teachers who successfully passed their examinations this year. DRYBRBAD. An application by a few settlers at Drybreid that a portion of the old school be left, and a new school established, was declined, as the removal of the school to the new site would afford ample accommodation to the whole of the district. TENDERS. The following tenders were accepted :— Erection of new residence at Upper Junction, T. P. Davis, .£223 ; erection of a porch to the schoolroom at Naseby, Donald M'Leod, £28 10s.
