ACCENT ON WORDS.
In the days of Rogers, the banker poet, "balQony" was accented on the second syllable, "obliged" was pronounced "obleeged," and " London," " Lunnon." " Admirable" was not bo very long ago accented on the second syllable.
Mr F. B. Sanbora says the French ate simplifying their orthography, while the English cling doggedly to the old forms. They are dropping silent letters like the "p " in " soulpteur " and the " o " in " faon."
