An American post office was established in 1710, but when Benjamin Franklin was. appointed Deputy Postmaster muoh later things began to Btir. In 1760 he established mail coaches between New York, Boston,' and Philadelphia. In 1840 Rowland Hill's reform went into effect in England, and letters went for Id which had hitherto cost 4d. Before 1845 a letter carried over 600 miles in America cost 25c. From 1845 to 1863 it. cost 10c, In 1863 the uniform 3c rate was adopted. English equivalent of an American cent is a half -penny. In 1892 the U.S.P.O. department carried 3,800,000,000 pieces of mail. The German mails.consisted of 2,705,000,000 in 1890. In1892 Great Britain's mail was 2,476,000,000 pieces.
