OWAKE.
April 28.— We have had a great deal of sickness in the district of late. On Sunday the wife of Mr Wilkie, surfaceman, Glenoruaru, died of apoplexy. She was only 42 years of age 1 and left a family of eight, the youngest being nine months old. Much sympathy is felt for Mr Wilkie in his bereavement. The funeral on Tuesday was largely attended. The Rev. W. G. M'Laren conducted the service in the house and at the Puerua cemetery. The funeral of Mr Meek's boy took place on Tuesday ako, in theOwakecemetery. Theßev. J. Watson Smith, Presbyterian minister, Ratanui, conducted the services at the grave. The boy (aged seven) was playing about a fallen tree, the butt of which was resting on a stump, when he slipped and fell on to another stump, rupturing himself. Much sympathy has been expressed for Mr and Mrs Meek, who live at Long Point. Yesterday (Thursday) morning at 9.30 Mr Kirks second daughter died after a severe illness. She was 19 or 20 years of age. Everything was done for her that could be done. She suffered from rheumatic fever, but the immediate cause of her death was Bright's disease. Mr Kirk, who lives at Upper Catlins, and his wife have the heartfelt sympathy of all in the neighbourhood. General.— The weather of late has been very disagreeable. We have had a constant drizzle for over a week. The roads are getting very muddy. Threshing operations are nearly finished. - The crops as a rule are lighter than usual.
