ORETI PLAINS.

April 27.— At a meeting of householders held in Drummond School on Monday night the following were elected members of Bchool committee for the ensuing year :-Messrs J. O. Shearer (chairman), W. Hamilton (secretary), E. Ghilton, F Robin, S. Knock, T. Dawson, and J. Wright. Very few turned up to the meeting, which shows the small interest taken in educational matters for such a rising, growing district. Sergeant Boyd, the board's drill instructor and truant officer, paid the school a visit to-day, when he put the "young idea" through a vigorous course of instruction in drill, &c, which will give him an idea as to how to deport himself if ever called upon to defend his "Fatherland." As the number on the roll is 70, and the attendance was considerably over 60, it may be inferred there were not able to state that the lad Meehan, who had his leg so badly

smashed a fortnight ago, is, thanks to Dr Riley's skilful treatment, progressing favourably, though not yet fit to be removed from Winton. Amusements.— Last week the "Foleys" gave an entertainment in the Drummond School which was fairly well patronised and- highly appreciated. Grain Season.— The long and almost unprecedented spell of fine weather we have had here has enabled most of the farmers to get their grain threshed and driven away already, while the roads are almost like carriage drives.
