September 24.— A meeting of the Dunstan Presbytery washeldatOphlr on the 21st, the Rev. Mr Telford (moderator) presiding. In response to the request of a deputation from Cromwell in April, it was resolved to refer the whole matter of the sustentation fund to the synod, in the hope that sucK steps may be taken as will result in an awakened interest and improvement in this important fund. The moderator of Wanaka district laid on the table a report of his visitation to the district. This stated, among other things, that the project of the Pembroke committee, that a minister' should be settled for three years under the church extension scheme, had been favourably received at all meetings. The Sabbath school, with an attendance of from 50 to 60, seemed to be specially flourishing. The. moderator haying supplemented the report with further details, a deliverance was adopted expressing satisfaction at the district moving in the matter of getting a settled minister and promising to assist, and the moderator was requested to communicate with the Church Extension Committee, to forward the matter. The Rev. Mr Lothian having .resigned the niodcratonship of the Wanaka district in favour of Mr Cumming, and having expressed his thanks to the people for their kindness and hospitality, Mr Gumming was unanimously appointed to the vacancy. Ihe overture with reference to the training of students was regarded as unnecessary, as the synod, with .the consent of the presbyteries, can deal with jiny application for admission oil its merits. , After a conference on the state ef religion and morals it was agreed to suggest that when the matter comes up before the synod it would be desirable to suggest the issue of a short practical address, •kindly, wisely, and faithfully worded, warning heads.of families and young people of the, dangers of the sins of gambling, social impurity, frequency jpf late hours, and drinking customs and at the same time inculcating on the rising generation the sacred duty of reverence for God's Sabbath, His Kiuctuary, and His worship. Tho Rev. J. M'Cosh Smith, on behalf of the Rev. Mr Reid, who has been labouring in the Laudor district since, January last, submitted a report showing that for nine months the district had fully complied with the requirements of the sustentation fund, and had, in addition, raised about L2O for the purchase of a horse, &c, for the minister. The attendance at and interest in services was fairly maintained. Gratification was expressed at the report and the results of Mr Reid's labours, the liberality and consideration of the people was ebinraended, and a hope expressed that before long the district may have a duly qualified and settled, minister., After the transaction of routine business the meeting closed with a vote of thanks for the use of the courthouse. -.
