TARANAKI v. CANTERBURY.

The football match Taranaki v. Canterbury was played at Hawera on Monday and was won by the former by 10 points to 6, made up as follows :— Taranaki, ono goal from a penalty kick, one goal from a try, and one try ; Canterbury, three tries. Canterbury played with great combination, which was much admired. Owing to the recent heavy rain the ground was. very sloppy. The Taranaki forwards played a good game, but the backs were not up to the usual form. There was a good attendance. . The correspondent of the Chnstchurch Press telegraphs :— " Taranaki were the heaviest team I ever saw, and playGd the roughest game, several players coming to blows. Canterbury had the best of the game throughout, and kept Taranaki hard on the defence. Thomas (Otago's old fullback) played a magnificent game for Taranaki, and saved his side frequently by his grand kicking and collaring. On dry ground, and under ordinary circumstances, I should expect Canterbury to beat Taranaki nine times out of 10. Mr Roberts, the referee, was hooted by the Hawera people, but a fairer man never walked a football field."
