SHOCKING CASE OF CRUELTY

Mastertox, August 10. In the R.M. Court to-day Thomas and Elizabeth Goodgame, of Mauriceville, were charged with illegally beating a girl named Thompson, 15 years of age, daughter of the latter. Medical evidence showed that the child was one mass of bruises. The child herself states she has been made to walk to a creek on a frosty morning without a vestige of clothing on, and had a vessel containing urine emptied over her bend, and made to swallow portion of the contents. Accused admitted having made the child sleep on the boards, and having thrashed her with a piece of wood, but denied having adopted unnecessary measures. The case was just about concluded when the female accused swooned and it was adjourned until Monday.

August 15. Elizaleth Goodgame was sentenced togfour months' imprisonment, and Thomas Goodgame to three months' hard labour. The decision was received with applause. The magistrate remarked that it would have been incredible to one who had not heard the evidence, that auy parents could have been so cruel to their offspring

At a meeting of the Lawrence District High School Committee it was resolved — " That seeing the teachers have power to read a portion of the Bible in school hours, it be left entirely to the rector's discretion to act as he chooses in the matter, and that whatever course he cares to take will have the support of the com mittee."
