THE GAELIC SOCIETY.

The ordinary monthly meeting of this society took place on the 3rd in the Stuart street Hall. Mr Dugald M'Lachlan occupied the chair, and in his opening address congratulated the members on the success of tho recent annual gathering, and eulogised the various speakers, singers, and others who had taKen part in it. A stranger from Scotland, who was present, mentioned to him (Mr M'Lachlan) that seldom could such a gathering been seen in connection with similar societies in the Home country. The secretary exhibited the violin which had been presented by Mr J M. Shearer to the society at its annual meeting. The instrument, which was manufactured by Mr Shearer himself, was a very valuable one, ano\ after Mr George Beatl^ had been requested to bring out its good qualities by playing upon it a selection of Scotch airs, the secretary was instructed to acknowledge thu gift and tender Mr Hhearer the society's best thanks for his handsome present. Mr Bcath's excellent playing was also heartily applauded.. 'Ibe concert which followed was well sustained by Mrs Chambers, Mrs Campbull, and Miss M'JDonald,. Messrs A. Boyd, John Honybone, C. M'Donald, D. Munro, R. Clark, Colin M'Kenzic, A. Smith, and G. Bcath. Some beautiful step dancing was executed by Mr R. Thomson- (Oamaru), and Messrs J. M'Kechnio (the society's piper), M. Livingstone, R. Thorn' son, and J. M'Kechnie, jun., played the pipes.
