HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the Otago High Schools Board of Governors was hold on Friday afternoon, and attended by the Rev. Dr Stuart (chairman), His Worship the Mayor (Mr C. R. Chapman), Dr Hislop, Mr G. G. Russell, and the Rev. A. R. Fitdhott.

FREE EDUCATION. Dr Belcher, rector of the Boys' High School, and Mr A. Wilson, rector of the Girls' High School, were present at the invitation of the board for the purpose of giving information in connection with scholarships. — After a lengthy discussion the following resolution, on the motion of Dr Hislop, seconded by Mr Chapman, was passed :—": — " That free education be granted to those candidates for junior scholarships who, failing to gain such scholarships, make 50 per cent, or over of tho obtainable marks, tho same as is done in the caso of senior scholarships." THE EDUCATION BOARD'S SCHOLARSHIPS.

The Chairman and Messrs Russell and Fitchett were appointed a deputation to wait upon the Education Board for tlic purpose of urging a return to the former regulations in regard to scholarships. .

REDUCTION OF I'EKS. It was decided that after the commencement of next ycarjfees in the class below tho Upper Third be reduced to LI 10s per quarter. I/BAVE OF ABSENCE. The Chairman's action in granting Mr G. M. Thomson a fortnight's absettco was approved of.

CELEBRATING AUBOH DAY. The Rector of the Boys' High School wrote stating that the attendance at the school had increased during the present half year by a satisfactory amount. He further stated that on Arbor Day he closed the school at 12.30 p.m., and with the assistance of the staff and head boys planted some ornamental trees in the school grounds, the cost of the trees being subscribed in the school. — The board received with much gratification the information respecting the action of the rector and the masters in celebrating Arbor Day.

STRATH-TAIKRI HUNS. A memo, was received from the Education department stating that the Governor-in-Council had consented to the reduction of Mr J. C. Buckland's rent of Strath-Taieri runs for one year, from March 1, 1892.— The communication was received.

FINANCIAL. Accounts amounting to L541 14s 3d, were passed for payment.
