Store Cattle.— There is no change to report in the position of the market for this class of stock. A moderate demand is experienced for grown cattle in forward condition, and some salest are being effected of such at prices comparing very favourably with those now ruling for fat Mixed sorts are not so readily placed, except at prices comparing very unfavourable with those now paid foii full-grown steers.— The Farmers' Agency Company (Limited) have sold during the week 500 head bullocks and spayed cows for Messrs MAuley (Portobello), R. T. Coomer(Gore), Kingston (Strath-Taieri), and others.— On Monday, May 9, The Mutual Agency Company of New Zealand (Limited), in conjunction with Farmers' Agency Company (Limited), sold at Middlemarch, on account of Mr J. J. MAuley, 248 head of cattle, mixed ages and classes. There was a good attendance of buyers, and every lot was cleared at satisfactory prices. Bullocks sold up to Lo, heifers to L 4 10s. Privately during the week The Mutual Agency Company has sold 95 head of cattle for various owners at quotations.
Store Sheep.— There is a considerable decrease in the number of these now offering, but even yet a very good demand is experienced, and although prices show no advance, they still continue firm. Good strong ewes, both crossbred and merino, could yet be placed, although the season is so far advanced. Young crossbred wethers have the most attention, but fewer of these are now available, with the exception of those in the hands of dealers, which invariably realise prices at auction relatively higher than those obtaining for fat stock. Privately and at auction during the week the Mutual Agency Company ok New Zealand (Limited) has sold 2240 sheep, principally crossbreds, at full market rates; also, a few stud Romney Marsh rams.— The Farmers' Agency CoMPANr of New Zealand (Limited) have sold during the week, at Clinton, Gore, and Middlemarch, 7028 store sheep at satisfactory prices. — Wright, Stephenson, and Co. have sold privately during the week 4000 crossbred and merino sheep at market prices. Country Sales.— On Thursday, sth inst., The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Jompany (Limited) held their regular auction sale at Clinton. There was a good attendance, aud nearly a'l came to tlo business. The entry was confined to sheep only, chiefly crossbreds, and. witha veryfairdemand, nearly all thelots presented were placed at prices quite on a par with previous sale rates. The following lots were disposed of— viz : 513 crossbred wethers at 12s lid, 91 do do at 12s 6d, 5!) do do at 12s lOd, 27 do do at 13s 9d, and l7dodo at lls 6d ; 43 crossbred ewes at 13s 6d, 76 do do at 14s, 25 do do at 13s 3d, 23 do do at 10s; 290 crossbred lambs at up to lls ; 379 merino ewes (aged) to 4s 9d ; 3 Leicester rams to 3gs ; 1 do Romney at 2Jtgs. — Tue Mutual Agency Company of Nkw Zealand (Limited) report as follows:— On Friday, May 6, we held our usual fortnightly sale at the Crown yards, B.ilclutha. The entry of stock was rather below the average of late sales, but a fair amount of business was transacted at about previous rates. Among others we sold 373 mixed crossbreds at 13s, 98 crossbred ewes at 10s 9d, 49 cwus at 12a, 300 merino ewes at quotations, as also a few lines of cattle.
Land.— The Mutual Agency Company of Nkw Zealand (Limited) reports having sold privatoly during the Mr R. .W. Brown's farm of 110 acres situated near Mosgiel, at a satisfactory figure. Taieri Horse Fair ftnd Stock Sale.— Donald Ridid and Co. report : We held our Usual fortnightly horse fair and stock sale at pur .Taieri yards on Tuesday. The day was beautifully finej and there was a large attendance of buyers and others interested in tho sale. Bidding throughout tho day was not particularly brisk, but prices on the whole were fairly satisfactory. Store Sheep : There are not so many offering now, and ewes, owing to the lateness of the season, are hardly so saleable, except for lines in lamb, which still command hlgQ prices. Crossbred wethers for turnip feeding' are particularly scarce, and fetch higher prices in proportion than fat. At Greytown to-day 670 sheep were penned, a large proportion of which were merinos. Bidding ivt auction was not brisk, and only a few sales were effected under the hammer ; nearly all forward were sold privately, however, and realised fair market values. The following sales were made : 250 crossbred lambs at Ba,' 100 merino eweß at 4s 9.<, 80 merino wethers at 9s, 75 merino ewes (culls) at 3s 3d, 15 Romney wethers (two-tooth) at 14s 3d. Store Cattle : Well-grown three and fouryear old bullocks in forward condition are in good demand for turnip feeding, and suitable lines find ready sale at good prices. We have buyers for suitable lines. As none of this class were yarded, no sales to report this week. Dairy cows and dry cattle sold at from LI 10s to L 3 10s. Horses : The' entry to-day consisted of 22 medium, draughts and several medium hacks. There were buyers present for horses suitable for farm work, and for these there was fair competition; for hacks and inferior draughts there was hardly any competition, and only a few changed hands. Medium draughts sold at Ll3 to Ll6 ; aged and inferior, L 5 to L 7 10s ; medium hacks, L 9 10s to Ll2 ; inferior, L3 los to L' 6 ss. Farm implements. &c. : We sold today a 15-coulter grain drill (Reid and Gray) at L 23 ss. and a sot three-leaf harrows at L 3. Our next sale Will be held on Tuesday, the 31st May, our usual sale day being a holiday. Sheepskins. — A good supply came forward foi? the sales on Tuesday. There was also a full attendance of the trade, and competition was keen for all lots brought forward. Some very good skins, both crossbred and merino, were catalogued, for which up to 6s 9d was realised. Dry merinos were in good demand. Good green crossbreds had the most attention, and all on thecata-' logue fit for mat-making brought very satisfactory prices. Country dry crossbreds, low to medium, brought Is 9d to 3s lOd ; do do merino, Is 8d to 3s Id ; f ull-woolled crossbreds, 4b 3d to 6s 9d :do do merino, 3s 8d to 5s Sd ; dry pelts, 2d to Is (id ; best green cjtjssbred skinß, 3s 3d to 3s 10J ; choice, 3s" lid to «>4d $ medium to good, 2s 3d to 3d ; green merino afcins— light Is 6d to Is Bil, best Is l()d to 2s 3d ; lambskins— best 2s 7d to 3s, medium to good Is 9d to 2s 6d each." Rabbitskins. — A brisk demand exists, and the market is firm. Consignments are still small, but all offered, of whatever description, are" keenly competed for, and realise full market values. Quotations for best autumn skins, BJd to lOd ; summer skins, 5d to 7d : suckers, halfgrown and inferior, 2d to 4Jd per lb. Hides. — The market is unchanged. A fair demand is experienced, and prices secured are about the same as those current lately. Quotations for heavy hides, 2id to 2}d ; extra do, 651b and over, 2Jd to 3d ; average price for country hides, lAa to 2d ; lieht, ljd to lid ; inferior and slippy, id to Id per lb. Tallow.— A very fair demand is experienced, and prices lately quoted continue firm, which ,we again quote : — For best rendered mutton, 19s to 20s £ medium to good, 16s to 18s 6d ; inferior to medium, 13s to 15s ; best caul fat, 12s 6d to 13s ; inferior to medium and good, 9s to 12s per cwt. Grain. — Wheat : As in the preceding week, this market has shown but. Jittle animation, and as supplies still come forward freely, with ,no inducement to shippers to operate, and millers only purchasing sparingly, we see no immediate prospect of any improvement ; even the small business passing is at reduced rates. Quotations :—: — For best Tuscan and velvet, 3s 8d to 3s lOd ; good to best, 3s' 4d to 3s 7d ; medium (nominal), 3s to 3s 3d ; inferior, 2s to 2s 9d (ex store, sacks weighed in, terms) Oats : The market for these is .very" steady and firm, and all offering find a ready sale. Bright milling and heavy plump feed are most in favour. Long Tartarians, bright and true to name, also well-grown Danish, free from other sorts, are beginning to have some attention ; but discoloured and damp do not command much notice, except for local use, at very much reduced, prices. Shippers and millers are purchasing more freely, it being now pretty well understood that the quantity to hand and yet to come forward will be a long way short compared with last season's supply. We quote prime milling at Is 6d to Is 6id ; best bright feed, Is 5d to Is s£d ; medium, la 4Jd to Is sd ; inferior, Is Id to Is 4d ; best Danish, ls-5d to Is 6d ; prime long Tartars, Is 6d to Is 7id (ex store, sacks extra, net ; Jd per bushel extra f.o.b. Dunedin). Barley : There is a very .good demand experienced for malting lines, whieffare not by any means numerous, and are likely before very 'long to command higher prices. A slight demand only exists for milling, and to effect sales' much lower prices have to be accepted compared with those obtained for malting. Feed barley'is occasionally inquired for, but in small quantities. Quotations : For prime malting, 3s 4d to 3s 6d : medium, 3s to 3s 3d ; feed and milling, 2s to 2s 8d (ex store, sacks extra ; terms). * • Grass Seeds.— There is some inquiry for ryegrass seed, which may result in business eventually, but in the meantime the sales effected are few and of small compass. Late quotations, however, are still maintained, which are : For farmera' dressed, Is 9d to 2s 3d,; extra clean, 2s 6d to 3s ; machine-dressed, 3s 3d to 3s 9d (ex store).— Cocksfoot seed is also inquired for, but the business done does not amount to much. Quotations r For best dressed, 3Jd to 4d ; medium, 2d to <3d perlb. Potatoes. — The market continues over-supplied. Prices, in consequence, show no improvement. Best Derwents are worth 32s o'd to 37s b'd ; inferior to medium, 25s to 30s per ton (sacks in). , Chaff.— The market is fully supplied with inferior and medium, which sells at 30s to 42s fid ; good, well-cut, heavy, and bright-coloured fetches 45s to 50s per ton. Dairy Produce. — A very fair demand exists for both butter and cheese. Prime salt butter is worth (dairy-made) 81d to 9d ; factory, lid to lljd per lb; dairy-made cheese, 3d to 4d ; factory" inquired for— medium size, 4^rl ; loaf shape, 5Jd per lb. Flax.— Meantime nearly all the mills are shut down for the season ; in consequence very little of this product comes to market, but even the little that does come is now difficult to place except at prices in sympathy with the low rates cabled from Home from time to time. Our last cablegram of date 6th inst. reports the Home market for New Zealand hemp very weak ; medium only worth L2O per ton there.
