GORE.
May 10.— This locality had a full share Of the general rainfalLof last week, and as it cleared off, the Hokonui tops were seen to sport their first white hats for the season. A comfortable change has taken place, and now a clear, dry snap has Set in.
Entertainment. — So well pleased was the conductor of the Presbyterian choir with the success of the concert referred to last week that he invited a whole crowd of his patrons to a social gvtliering in the Town Hall last Wednesday evening. After refreshments dance music was supplied by the choirmaster and assistants — who proved themselves equally at home with secular as with sacred themes— and midst dance and song a few hours were agreeably'spent. All .classes of the country were represented in the hall, and by every one the meeting was pronounced a most enjoyable little affair. ' Political.— The Bruce bloodless victory is, of course, the grand topic pro. tern., and notwithstanding high falutin indulged in among us only a few days ago the amount of the Hon. John's friends are as crestfallen as some other people are jubilant. Of our public papers the Opposition organ appeared next morning with a sensible leader in praise of Bruce and the result, while the Government hornblower furnished its readers with the particulars in about an inch of type of the size used in pocket prayef" books; The waste, pipe Column is better treated by the printer. - Ecclesiastical.— Gore has of late become intensely religious. Population last census, 1500, with five denominations, equipped with clergy and all other suitable paraphernalia in full blast, and now another kirk, under the wing of a, body new to Gore, the Congregationalism, is in the course of erection. The pulpit is to be filled by a new ma.n, th.c Rev. Mr Lewis, from Auckland, who has CQino to' tq.ke charge of St. James' congregation. He went on duty last Sunday, and had a well-whipped up quota of hearers. Political canvassers were never more active in hunting up votes than the churchy touts were in the exercise of their duties ; the zeal, the vehement desire shown for the good of souls and the glory Of Gore, has been quite refreshing. " Those go to church who never went before, And those who always went now go the more."
Three times a day is the orthodox thing for the extra faithful, and if it were, passible to have four meetings there would not be one too many. New brooms sweep clean.
