One Man One Club
TO DRAUGHTS EDITOR WITNESS.
Sir, — As things are at present in Otago a draughts player may be a member of several clubs ; but that he should in interclub matches play for any club he chooses is not right, — that is in my opinion ; and I for one should much like to see this rule altered in the general interests of the game in New Zealand. Under existing circunir stances it is possible for a club to get the assistance in a match, of three or four of the bestplayers from as many different clubs ; provided of course that they happen to be enrolled as' members of the club requiring > aid. Suppose Young ClubInterior— whose members play only for that club— play a match with one of those " quadrupeded" (that word is more expressive than conventional) clubs and get badly beaten all along the line, it would be very disheartening, and although they try their level best again and again, the result is much the same. Finally they begin to despair and Young Club | Interior is soon a thing of the past.
Those young clubs that are springing up here, there, and everywhere deserve the encouragement of all whose primary object is to make- the game more popular and more universally played than it is at the present day. With your permission 1 would like to have the opinion of other players on "One man play for one Club."— l am, yours faithfully,
James Milne. Hokonui, March 2(5.
[We should like very much to see this subject ventilated. Several coniplaints were heard on this point last year, and as we stated then, the responsibility devolves upon the clubs themselves. Unfortunately Otago has no draughts association to cope with such difficulties ; but it would be possible for a club to frame a rule to the effect that a player may join two clubs for the purpose of practice, but shall only play in interchip matches for one. — Dr. Ed. O.W.]
