A STRIKE IMPENDING. (Per Press Association.)

London, February 21

The owners of the Durham coal pits have issued an ultimatum to the men, in which they aunounce their intention of making a reduction of 7£ per cent, in wages, but offer an alternative of making a 5 per cent, reduction at once and an additional 5 per cent, on May 1. They state that unless the miners accept these terms the collieries will be closed. Eighty-seven thousand men are affected by the ultimatum. February 22.

It is expected that 275,000 colliery workmen will cease work on March 12. It has not yet been decided how long the stoppage will last, but the men will not receive any strike pay. The dispute between the engineers and their employers will be referred to arbitration.
