London, February 17. Wool is steady. The quantity to be received for the second series is unlimited. February 21. The total quantity of wool catalogued at the series just closed was 314,000 bales, of which 291,400 were sold, including 167,000 to Continental buyers and 16,000 to America The j course of prices has been irregular. Compared with the closing rates at the December series, all classes of merino were lower, and fine crossbreds Id lower Prices were on an average lower than those ruling at the December sales, but superior lambswool brought Id more, although the top wrices were below those obtained in 1886. The wool trade is depressed, and an early revival is not expected. The following private cablegrams have been received : — Messrs Dalgety and Co. (Limited) dated London, 17th inst.:— "The next wool sales will open on 29fch March; quantity is not limited, and arrivals up to commencement of sales will be admitted. The wool sales continue with less spirit, and lately reported rates are hardly maintained." "Wool sales dull, but without further change. Three hundred and thirteen thousand five hundred bales catalogued, of which 289,500 sold; 183,000 taken for export, including 16,000 for United States." The Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) :— " Wool: The sales closed this daj-. Since the close of last sales greasy merino super., medium inferior, and medium crossbred are {d to Id per lb loner. Washed merino super., scoured merino super., and washed merino medium and inferior are Id per lb lower. Scoured merino uedium and inferior and fine greasy crossbred are Id to l^d per lb lower. Coarse greasy crossbred anil greasy merino lambs' medium and inferior are -kl per lb lower. Other descriptions are unchanged. The total quantity sold during last sale is 286,000 bales, of which 167,000 bales have been taken for the Continent and 16,000 bales for America. It is estimated that 25,000 bales have been held over for future disposal." Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. (trom Messrs Sanderson, Murray, aud Co.) :— " Sales have closed weak. Market very irregular. Compared with opening rates, market has declined l\ per cent, for merino, 10 per cent, for fine greasy crossbred, and 5 per cent, for inferior to medium crossbred."
