KELSO.

February B.— The annual picnic given by the residents of Greenvale was held on Saturday last in a very romantic spot at the entrance to the Leithcn Gorge. The spot chosen resembled greatly an entrance to a Highland glen, the scene at certain times being most beautiful. The landscape with its green foliage and the ladies with their light dresses would have made a picture for any artist. Tho day being all that could be desired for an outing, every family within a radius of 15 miles was well represented, and in some cases from the infant in arms to the hoary-headed grandfather. Messrs A. Halcrow and D. Doake, of Kelso, kindly lent their two new boats for the day, and I need scarcely add that they were well patronised. Games of the usual kind were indulged in, but as the sun shone rather strongly boating proved itself to be the order of the day. Refreshments of the very best kjnd were served liberally during the day fey the residents of Greenvale, who are becoming proverbial for their hospitality. Before the gathering dispersed Mr J. M'Farlane (member for the Tapanui riding of the Tuapeka County Council) proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the entertainers for their liberality, and also to the boatmen for the use of their boat. The vote was responded to by loud cheering, which re-echoed through tho gorge, and no doubt the Lcithen will be a favourite resort for piea&ur.a»seekers in the future.
