REMORSE: A SONNET.

Didst yield thee, for some fitful joy, to sin's

alluring wiles ? Ah me! that thou should'st pay so terrible a toll To Him, who, angel-guised with wanton smiles, Didst sometime occupy thine inmost soul. Ah, soul of mine that thou should madly close Thy portals 'gainst the Truth-enlight'ning ray Which heav'n-born from the Sun of Truth arose To light dark souls unto Eternal Day ! Woe that thou, unillum'ed by God-sent beam, In Stygian blackness blindly stumbling on, Should'bt welcome, dessert soul —ah baleful theme !— Deceit, for drear Remorse to feed upon. Remorse, Remorse, Remorse, can st c er efface The mem'ry of sin's soul-sickening embrace ? — C. N. B.
