GAMES.

Game 1780—" Kelso."

Draughts Matoh. I UNION V. SOUTH INVBROABGIM. J GLUb. The return match between these two clubs wai played on fche 16th

insfc. in the Union rooms, Invercargill, and, as will be seen by the score, resulted in an even more exciting finish than on the former occasion, when the Union Olub won the matoh by 1 game. Originally it was intended that 14 or 15 men aside should play, but the southern olub were unfortunate in that a number of their players were unable to attend. Notwithstanding the defection of such players as Welsh, Dunlop, Ackers, Bsnuin Bros., and others, the oontesb was a most keen one, resulting in a tie. A good deal of \ interest centred in the last game, that between the veteran J. Patterson and J. Anderson, in whioh the latter had three kings to Patterson's two, but could not win, and the game waa ultimately decided on a time limit as a draw. This decision, although giving some dissatisfaction, was practl- ■ cally the only way out of tba difficulty, Anderson dearly showing his inability to force the game. The following are the scores <—

On the conclusion of the mutch the teams adjourned to Baealde's, where the Union was entertained by the suburban olub. , A proposal to send a team from the united olubf to Mataura on the 9tb of flovembar to play a match against the combined distriob team waa, after considerable diaotnsfoa left [ in the bands of a subcommittee, consisting of Messrs T. S. Hlcol, J. H. Whitaker, and H; M'Llskey, I to ascertain the prospects of the match eventuating, and, if possible, conclude arrangements for the trip. A few complimentary and congratulatory speeches having been made, and a! hope been expressed for another! matoh between the clubs at an .early date, the gathering dispersed with the customary vote of thanks to the chair. [The above was reoeired too late for insertion last week. With reference to the disputed endgame between Messrs Patterson and Anderson, we are .of opinion, from particulars received, that the time limit adopted was justified by the circumstanoes, A mistake was made in not having a referee appointed for the matoh —his decision would have been received without demur.—u r.— Dbaughxs Bd.] Obituary. Mb Daniel behsb. Draughts players throughout the colony will learn with regret the sad news, !( that Mr Daniel Reese, - president of the Ohristh ohuroh Draughts Olub, after a long and painful illness, died at Sumner on October 11 . Mr fieese, who was only 49 years of age at the time of his death, was born at Wishaw, Lanarkshire, in 1841. For a number of years he took a great interest in the " silent game." Canterbury players are indebted to his efforts iv organising teams to play in interprovinoial and local matches ■ When the famous " Herd Laddie " visited the coloniei Mr Beese did his best to seoure a visit from the champion to Canterbury, whioh proved more successful than the most-, sanguine enthusiast dreamed of, The " Herd Laddie," who was ! always grateful for any act of kindness, formed ft warm friendship for Mr Beese, who was indeed a faithful friend to all the "brethren o* the brod." jHe leaves a wife and family of five sons and four daughters to mourn their loss.— Weekly Press.
