AUGUST 18.— The uiual meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society was held in Bell's Hall on the 12th, the Eev. Panton Brown In the chair. Mr Fraser, Gore, delivered a, lecture on '* London from '60 till '69." He gave a very graphic sketoh of London street life, th« appearance of the metropolis of the world, and its size. The chief topics touched on were the shops, the orowds of people encountered, and the possibilities for the study of human charaoter met with, the extent of traffic in the public thoroughfares, &o. He described the entrance of Princess Alexandrina, London illuminated, the Lord Mayor's day, and many other days when the great city puts on its holiday garb. , He gave a vivid sketoh of the last public execution in London, presented to his audienoe a description of the different irreat men of European fame he had seen go along Fleet street to J the {Guildhall; and concluded by giving a detailed account of the excitement in London at the rise of the Fenian movement. The lecture was an interesting and very instructive one, and at its conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer on the motion of Mr Taylor. Baidway.— Two letters have been received from our M H.E., in whloh he says that he had had an interview with the Minister of Poblio Works, during whloh he urged tbe Government to place a sum of money on the estimates to complete the line as far as it is now formed. The matter has been referred to the Railway Commissioners, and no doubt there it will be safely kept until the coming of the millennium. The steps of justloe tread slow but sure. In the meantime the line stands as a monument of how Government try to stop the exodus of people from our shores. Between the method adopted by the SohooYOommiistoners in settling the land and the diffioulty ©f obtaining justioe for our settlers we are iv a sad plight here.
