GLENKENICH.

August 18.— On Tuesday, the 11th inst., about 60 ladies and gentlemen aieembled at the Glenkenioh schoolroom to attend a meeting of 1 the Mutual Improvement Society. Previous to the programme of the evening being gone on with Mr Boss (the president, alluded to an anonymous letter that appeared in the Tapanui Courier, censuring him for allowing a step dance to be performed at a previous meeting of the sooiety, while knowing sucn a performance was most objectionable to a considerable portion of the audience, and further averring that Mr Boss' action in doing so was olearly a desire to annoy parties holding such views. Mr Boss, who evidently keenly felt the unfairness of suoh a " stab in the dark," most emphatically denied- a desire either on his part or that of the committee of management to have any item on their programme that might prove objectionable to any one of the audience. Mr Boss evidently keenly felt the injustice, of the charge, and was very much affeoted at its being necessary to deny suoh an imputation. Mr C , Fraser severely criticised the objectionable and untruthful letter ; closing some trenchant remark* with a well-deserved panegyric on Mr Boss, in the course of whioh he said there was not another man in the distriot who would be less inclined to harm his fellowman than Mr Ross, or who would try to help his fellowmau more, and it was matter for congratulation to have such a man in the district, and especially to have him presiding at local meetings. Mr Fraeer concluded with some severe comments on the cowardly action of the anonymous writer who brought the baseless accusation complained of. His remarks were vociferously applauded, and at the finish cheer aftercheer was given for Mr Boss, who was induced on the motion of Mr Fraser, seconded by Thomas Jenkins, Esq., to reaocept the chair, when all "went merry as a marriag6 bell," and the folio idog programme gone on with— viz . soog.
