Notes from Boxburgh.
(FaOM OVR OWS OOBBlSPOKmBNT.) June 1. Mining newi is practically the only topic here. The Commissioners Flat Company Is, or has been, in somewhat troubled waters. A. meeting of the local shareholders was held recently, at which Mr Thomas Andrew was appointed delegate to Dunedin. There is something wrong. I believe that all the shares that have been issued are now paid, and the earnings have not been great. So that before a fresh start can be made the shareholders will have to look pleasant and raise a little capital. No elevating has been done yet, but the plant will arrive shortly, and let us hope the dividends also. A nine inch elevator, plenty of water, and good management will then put the spec on Its legs again. But in any case the size and number of the stones in the claim will always be a serious drawback. MrE M. Smith has resigned the management of the claim. "Turn we to survey" the Amalgamated Company.—This claim is getting along iteadlly; During l<wt month (May) 2320z were raised at a profit of | something like £880. This is very cheering, and if it can only be made to la&t. the shareholders will be quite happy— and rloh. The wBBh is undeniably good, and I think the-e 1$ plenty of it. In faot, I have it on good authority that both the upper and the lower elevators are in a fair 'way to help Mr Leary to fulfil bis promises of golden dividends, which he so graphically described last November, and I can assure him that no shareholder will receive them more thankfully than the pestilent correspondent of the Daily limes. I wish to say, however, that I cannot help thinking that it would be better if the pitch of the baxes was lowered. Mr Pyke and some of the Dunedin directors visited the claim on Saturday last, and held a short interview with some of the local shareholders in the evening. Next Wednesday will probably let us all k now how we stand. Hercules No. 1 is pegging away steadily. There nas been a change in the management, Mr Butler was summarily deprived of tbe control of the claim, Mr William White taking his ptaee. Most people here were greatly lurpriaed, your correspondent Included. I think lam not wrong in Baying that Mr Butler received little more than a few minutes' notice. The groundß c.f tbiß action of the directors are known to themselves, no doubt, but the principle i seems bad. Perfect Mr Butler may not be, but. he i ha 3 worked hard, and has had no breakages in his i plant, and It does seem strange that he should be J set adrift in such an unceremonious fafnion The Island Block companies are doing well
