SIR JOHN MACDONALD.

or "Old To-morrow" as he is called, because he puts off until to-morrow what can be done to-day, is worthy of a word or two. He was a prominent man in public affairs before the Canadian States federated. In fact, he called together the conference that led to the forming of the Canadian Dominion in 1864, and may therefore be called the Father of the Dominion. Since 1866, when federation had become an actual fact, he has been perpetual Prime Minister, excepting for one short period of two years. By some he is looked upon as an astute politician — a " gerrymander " — a man that by diplomacy and judicious change of opinions can keep the lead in Parliament; but others think him a born statesman, well fitted to govern the Dominion and work out its destinies. Whatever he is, he is able to get Orangemen and Catholics, Liberals and Conservatives, and all other shades of opinion, co work together in the same Ministry.
