Milton.
There are two things for which a man is never sufficiently prepared, and that is twins. There are also two things which I was not prepared to meet with in Milton/ or find combined in any one place — namely, the finest looking girls and the most somniferous aspect with respect to everything pertaining to the town. One quality is, however, quite enough to make a place distinguishable. Hence let us fix Milton in the memory of my readers by the first of tbe two instead of by the last. Another fact' to be recorded about this town is this : I heard there in the Presbyterian Church as good a sermon as I have heard in any church in the country— a thoroughly .practical one. Certainly* a discourse upon a moral or intellectual truth is likely to be far more beneficial than expositions of old fables from a barbarous people in the world's childhood. The vicinity about Milton is pretty, though I missed the pleasant walks by the river bank in Balclutha. The library could stand a good deal of improvement. It is much inferior both to those of Balclutha and Lawrence. With regard to industries, Mr M'GiU's* 1 roller flour mill i 3 the main feature. There are larger mills in the country, but, as the Exhibition proved, none better.
Tbe Timaru borough valuation roll gives a total rateable value of £37,574, or £110 less than last year. There has been no addition to the Dumber of dwellings or stores during the year, but several old ones have been replaced by new building*.
