Lawn Tennis.

From another source I get a most virulent " slating " on account of my remarks about lawn tennis in last notes. Now, X know no more about the game itself than a colonial doctor knows of Latin or Greek. Probably the game is useful in its place— as is a mustard plaster — useful for giving exercise to girls and fops ; but it certainly is not a manly game. To serious eyes it seems as stupid and aimless a pursuit as the violent contortions accomplished by a kitten playing with a reel of cotton. Those places where lawn tennis is the main object of aspiration show a very low standard of intelligence and education.
