KAITANGATA.

November 10.— The eleotion business has fairl set ia here Mr Thomson has addressed th eleotors, and Mr Smith ia to follow on the 13th insfc. The latter, in addition to addressing the electors personally, has had a printed manifesto issued showing his views &o. ; this is a good idea, as the eleotors can quietly peruse the same at their fireside, and make themselves acquainted with the candidate's ideas. Mr Thomson had a good meeting, and was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence. His Worship the Mayor presided. A requisition to the late member is being signed, but T don't think anything will come of it. As I stated preivously, Mr Thomson appears to be th« favourite here.

Coals.— The Castle Hill Goal Co. having sunk to a depth of about 600 ft, ttruok a seam of coal some Bft or 9ft through of excellent quality, but they are still continuing with the shaft, and expect to reach a larger seam shortly. This company are also going in for brick making, and the plant for the same is being erected adjoining the mine. The railway has also beea surveyed along Eddyatone street, and I understand the work will be pushed ahead with all poisible speed. The other mines are keeping very busy just now, but the fine weather coming on will tend to slacken trade a little.

Wkathbr.— Since last writing we have had our shat-eof wet weather j in fact, the last month finished up with very stormy and web weather. It is still raining, but I think the worst is by. The river has been exceptionally high, and some of the low lands are flooded.

Sh iotists. — Some of our volunteers have taken a trip to the Lakes to try their luck as marksmen, and will no doubt keep up the reputation < f the company. Bowiing. — Thejgreen is in fair o^der, but the players are few, owing no doubt to the inclement weather. To-day being a holiday a few matches were played. There is a good membership this year, and no doubt when the weather takes up things will bo lively. Signs or tub Times. — The Caledonian Sooiety meet this week to arrange for their annual sports, and this year is expected to eclipse all others; but we shall see. I believe there is a balanoe in hand, which will give the new committee something to work on.
