November 3.— -The farmers held a meeting the other eveniDg to form a farmers' club in the distrlot. About 30 persons attended, and a club was formed. A meeting will be held on Saturday evening ne*t to appoint office-bearers and to consider. rules. , Opening Up Land for SBTTiBMKNT.-TheSur- , veyor-general 'and Otago'a chief surveyor came through from Oatlins to view the country about to be thrown open for settlement. They were met at Waikawa by a buggy, but had to travel 35 miles through heavy bush country before reaching there, and as the weather was very stormy and wet, the walk must have been a very unpleasant she. ' . Mining.— The dredge Alpha (leased some 12 months ago by the Mataura Mouth Dredging Company from the Invercarglll Borough Council) is about to be dismantled prior to her return to Inver,oargill. When I say that the company has expended over has got very little more, than £60 in return, little more need be laid.
Deepening the Eivbr.— An effort is being made by tbe county, member, Mr Baymond, to have the ford about four miles up the river deepened while tho dredge is here. The Government promiard £30 if the Southland County Council would undertake tbe work and expend another £33. In the event of £60 being insufficient, Tlmpany Brother! promised £10, and the owners of tbe Kakanui £10. As the county engineer reported that £60 would be ample for the whole work, tbe County Council then apportioned the cost as follows :— Government, £30 ; council, £10 ; Timpany Brothers, £10; Kakanui Company, £10. Some bitch has ooourred, and the work may not be done.
Dairy Factory.— The Ofcara Dairy Factory is again at work, the milk supply being over 500gaI a day. This amount will be more than doubled when all the cows are in.
