WAIWERA.
August 18.— The wenher for some time past has been very mild, with light frosts at nights. At present it is a little changeable; if, however, it should keep fine for a few weeks sowing will be vigorously pushed on. There is as yet very little sowing done, and that principally patches of wheat. About September seems to bo quite early enough for our general sowing. So far as I can ascertain the area put in crop this year will be far less than it has been for many years past, owiug to bad prices and the gleomv grain prospects. That, together with the promise of good returns from sheep, which are now receiving considerable attention in our district, will tend to limit the area (own. Some remarkably good lots of sheep have been bred and sold from the dlstrlot this year. Among the best that I have heard of are the returns received by Mr Stewart for a large flock of lambs, whioh were sold about two months ago for freezing, and whioh netted 16a per head . Last year Mr Stewart's whole nook at shearing time, Including wool, of course, returned over 2Cs per head. These amounts I can vouch for as being correct. As a consequence I consider that Mr Stewart has gained a year over most farmers in i» general way, and I think some of our so-called great men might with profit take a leaf out of his book on sheepbreeding and bringing to early maturity. Cattle Disease.— -Mr Murray, of Hosevale farm, has lately lost several head of cattle from some internal complaint. In each case, just before dying, the afflic" ed animal Beems to go ntmosfc mad, raging furiously and i< aming at the month. The dirpct cause is as yt a mvstcry. The Lambing.-- I noMce lots of young lambs here and there frisking about and apparently doing well. Tbmpekance.— On Monday evening the Hey. B. Walker gave a temperance lecture in the schoolhome. The room was comfortably filled, some coming from long distances. The lecturer was listened to very attentively throughout. The Rev. Mr Spenoo occupied the chair, and in that capacity ndded materially to the success of the meeting. There was a good collection, and several persons joined the Alliance.
