Notes from Wakatipu. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
Arrow, July 7.—ln spite of the froat and scarcity of water reports come to hand from time to time of evidences that all the gold has not been dug yet. Probably such instances are even more frequent than heard of, for men nowadays know better what to do with their money than formerly, and as a rule keep their own counsel. Thb Gaxxant Tip Company held their meeting last Monday night, declaring a dividend of 4d per 24,000 share, whloh is the third " divi." this seaion. The total amount of gold obtained for the past season is 8970z 12dwt, which, considering that the mill lost nearly one-third of the summer through the want of water, is a very fair return. Half-a-dozen such mines would soon make a stir amongst our mountains, aud infuse a little more life Into mining. The Sunrise Company (Macatown) is meeting with improving and eucoura«lng prospects. The lode ■which is now being driven on is showing lome very nice stone, all the indications being highly favourable of the stone belonging to a permaueut and rich Thk Phcehix Mine (Skippers). — I notice the manager, Mr Fred Evans, has taken the bint thrown out about sending the plans of his mine to the London Exhibition. It is rather surprising that the Idea was not taken up by mine managers generally at the late New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition. At present dredging is the only division of mining In which there Is any stir at all. The new dredge for the Sew Hoy Company will soon be afloat, and Is likely to do well, If the prospects obtained continue. Amongst the companies coming on are the Talisman, the Golden Bar. the Frankton Beach, and one or two others, who will all be at work before Christmas, in the ordinary course of things, and if all goes well. At the Upp>*r Shotover, the Sandhill* Company report that all their electric plant has arrived from England, and the preliminary operations upon the site of its erection are in a forward state, so that it may be expected that this oompany will ba producing testimony of the value of their ground during next summer. The Wakatipu and Kawarau Companies dredges are lying Idle, pending being fitted with larger boilers. After all that has been said and published about these companies, it Is extremely unpleasant to say any more, but it Is to be hoped that when these dredges have got to work properly the shareholders will be rewarded for their patience and faith. To the dredging companies already In existence has recently been added the Maori Point Dredging Company, which has been privately floated, it Is understood, with a capital of £9000.
