LAKE WANAKA.
Albertown, June 16. The Licensing Benches in connection with the Wanaka district have held the';annual sittings at Uardr na, Cromwell, and Baunookourn. At Oardrona the renewals were grante without comment. At Cromwell and Bannockbui J 2° *i n w \ a lod 8 6d b y the police against ea.. of the hotels, but as the benches granted the licens the objections apparently stood on a very shadov foundation. Mesßrs Trevathen and Holden, w, formerly held general licenses at Luggate ai Queensbury respectively, now applied for accomn tfation licenses, and the bench refused them, ladjourned the cases until the 28th inst. to enal> them to put in freßh appliodtiom forfceneral license Occurrences often crop up which inspirs us with 11, belief that the Licensing Act is a most wonder!, i . affair, but I will defer further remarks for n Lt weeks.
Nbw Blood. -Mr Charles Turnbull, the reyma<> ing partner of the Wanaka station, is apparently <■ acquisition to the district. Hecently he called" ' publio meeting for tho purpose of forming a footbn, , club, a proposal whioh was onthusiaßtieaUv,adopti> ■ officers being elected and a full club formed. Fiftet turned out for practice last Saturday afternoon, bn I have been unable to obtain particulars. The stoic • were closed to enable the assistants to play, understand that either the Cromwell or Bannock bum Club will be challenged in duo time. Mining.— There are now four applications for ■ dredging claims on tho Upper Clutha between. Albertown and Luggate. These dredges are worked in three shifts, in 24 hours, of four men eaoh, so that Luggate and Albertown will receive considerable r.ddiHons to their populations. As some of tho • dredgemen are married and have familiaa, the respective school registers will be enriched by tho addition of several scholars Mr Sew Hoy has started to prospect the area of his dredging claim at - Branch creek, Cardrona. Under his superintendance several Chinese are sinking a paddock, and as the past seasons have been co dry, they have very little water to contend with, and no doubt the ground will be well prospected. The Wkafhkr still excites much wonder. There • is neither rain nor frost, but it is very cold, and frequently we have plenty of fog, sometimes obscuriog the sun all day.
