SATURDAY'S MATCHES.

The Dunedin Football Club played a scratch match Captain v. Deputy-captain ou the Caledonian ground on Saturday. Austin coptained the former side (Colours) and Martin Ihe latter (Blues). The game was extremely fast and some fine play was shown. After an exciting and close contest the game ended in a win for the Biues by 10 points to 8. Tries were obtained by Mitchell, Montgomery, Martin, Power, M'Grill, Turton, and M'Lean. The passing, on the whole, was very creditable, although some of the players ignored tho well-known rule of not passing in frout of their own goal. At Carisbrook the Pirates played two practice matches on Saturday, the first of which was the Probable Fifteen v. Tho Next Seventeen. The former was captained by A. W. ) Morris, and the latter by Drabble, the Fifteen being declared the winners when time was called. The game on the whole was a good one, some capital play being shown on both sides, but there were one or two faults noticeable. One of these was the manner in which a large number on both sides persisted in talking throughout the game, and another fault is the way in which a few forwards (fortunatoly only a few) played a decidedly off-sidy wing game, coming round the scrum repeatedly, and waiting for the ball to come off one of their opponents to pounce upon it, or to spoil the man to whom it comes. The second match was a Third Fifteen against tho rest of the club and all comers, and was likewise a very good game, being fast and open. The Fifteen were rather light for their opponents, who numbered some players . from other first fifteens. The Union Club played a Probable Fifteen against two teams of 20 and 23 respectively. < Henderson captained the Fifteen, and Hutchinson the Club. The first match wa9 very fast, and resulted in a win for the Fifteen by 5 points to 1. Tries were obtained by J. M'Farbne, Beadle, and Alexander. The only score on the other side was a try, obtained by Dryden. The play at times was very uninteresting, the forwards having far too much to say. The Club's side played a very selfish game, every man playing for himself, too much scrum being iudulged in,and not enough passing. Thero was also some good passing spoilt throuph players trying to do so when collared, iusteac 1 of passing before they are caught. Tho second game was a great improvement on the first After a very evenly contested match, the Fifteeu were declared the winners by 2 points to 1, the tries being obtained by Porteous and Davis, Robson scoring for the Club. The Alhambra Club held two practice games on Saturday. The junior members of the club playing first, and a good fast game resulted in a draw, each side scoring a try. The tries were obtained by Ford and Forrester, while T. Downes, Steele, Borrie, and R. M'Cormack (backs), and Storer, Miller, Wallace, Ford, and Coates (forwards) were the most noticeable. The Fifteen then played a team of Colours from the club, and a very enjoyable game resulted in a win for the Fifteen by five goals (15 points) to nil. The tries were secured by Noel (2), Baker, M'Donald, and Robertson, one each. G Rostieaux, being in good form, converted them all into goals. The forwards and backs, on the Colour's side played splendidly. The Kaikorai Club played their Probable Team against All Comers, and after a hard fight; the game resulted in an easy win for the Probables. A Ohristchurch telegram states that the football matches for the club championship were continued on Saturday afternoon. The chief interest centred in the match between Canterbury College and Christchurch. The game was very even, and produced a splendid exhibition of football. Christchurch won by two goals from penalty kicks to three tries. East Christchuroh beat Christ's College by five goals and four tries to nil. Merivale defeated Addington by 4 points to 1. The Port Chalmers Club played a scratch game on Saturday, sides being captained by Wilson and T. Crawford. The game was a great improvement on any prsvious one, and resulted in a win for Wilson's side by 3 points to 2. Wilson (2), Osborne, A, Bell, and T. Crawford were the scorers. Buckley, Strachan, Falconer, Osborne, Holden, Fairley, and M' Alpine showed good form. A team representing tho employes of the Daily Times and Witness Company journeyed to Waitati on Saturday, and defeated the local club by 3 points to 2. The game was a hard and fast one, and a warm sun in a clear sky made it also a hot one. Throughout the Times had the best of the game, play being mostly in the Waitati's twenty-five, and had it not been for the excellent kickiug and running of A. Taiaroa the visitors must have increased their score. Harris, in the first spell, obtained a try for the Tirnpe, while Davidson, making a long run nearly the whole length of the field with barely aDy opposition, did likewise for Waitati. The kicks at goal were failures. During the second half of the game Taiaroa secured a try for Waitati, and Minn and Bolton each scored for the Times, the latter securing his try just before the call of time. Again the kicks at goal were failures. Taken all through the game was a good one, and excellent play was shown for Waitati by Basket, Taiaroa, Davidson, and Sounesp, and for the Times by Harris, Bolton, Brookes, and Smeaton (backs), and Ballantyne, Roberts, Minn, Campbell, and Dtiudon (forwards). Tbo visitors were afterwards entertained at dinner at the Saratoga Hotel.

The Pacific playeii a scratch match at Tahuna Park, Probable First Fifteen v. the Club, and after a fast and open game the Fifteen at the call of time had placed 9 points (two goals and three tries) to their credit, while the Olnb scoro was 3 points (a goal, potted by Parsons), For the Fifteen, W. King (2), J. King (2), and Sullivan (1) scored tries, two of which were converted into goals. On the Fifteen's side the following also played well — Richardson, M'Kolyey, Butler, P. Drumm, pnd Watson ; and for the Club, Lister (2), Dole, Parsons, Hardy, Brady, «nd Smith.
