A L-tfSsciN TO THE' Builder.— There is a good tale told of a keen old builder who was approaching one day some boildiugs which were being erected by his workuien, when he observed one of the men standing on the scaffolding with his hands in his pockets. Going up the ladder cautiously, he stepped on to the scaffold, and said : " Now I've caught you. We'll have no mote of this "j and putting his hand into his pocket,, took out four days' pay, as it was only Friday, and passing it to the man ordered him off the building. The man pocketed the money and departed without a word. The master directly afterwards approached the foreman ,> and said : " I've just discharged yon lazy fellow." The foreman looked tip in surprise, and said : " \Vhich one 7 " The master, pointing to the rapidly retreating figure, said : " Yon man." The foreman laughed outright, and said : ! " You surely have not paid that man 1 He was not working for us, he was only asking for a job."
