REVIEW OF THE PAST SEASON.

(Continued.)

The president of the Tuapeka Bowling Olub (Mr ReveU) having offered trophiea for each of the four playera in the winning rink for rink matches played by members of that club during the season, the final match was played off on Monday, llfch March last, between the rinks skipped by Mr A. Macdonald aad Mr J J. Woods respectively, when the latter won by 10 points; the scores being: Woods, 24; Macdocald, 14

On the 16th March the return match between Scotch and English members of ths Christchurch Club was played, when victory declared for those playera who hailed from the Land o' Cakes, the scores being : Scotch, 87 j English,

80 ,The Englishmen having won the first match, the result was a draw. The deciding match will therefore be an interesting one. On the 23rd March, "fifteen good men and true" — so said the local papers the time— of tho Caledonian Olub journeyed to Milton to try conclusions with the Toko playera. They were moat hospitably received and treated, and also dealt out a good Bound drubbing. Although the scores were pretty equal, yet I think that the Caledonians were rather taken back at the resclt, whioh was as follows : — Milton, 85$ Caledonians, 81. The visiting club had to borrow a player at Milton to make up the full strength of four rinks. On the same day the Roslyn Olub, who had jonrneyed up the night before, had a very pleasant game with the Lawrence Club. They were_ most warmly welcomed, and shown all the lions of the pleasant little mining township. A splendid supper awaited them on their arrival, a smoke concert followed, and next morning they were driven to the Blue Spur; in fact every hospitality was shown them. Three rinks were played on each side, and the game was made a two-hours one, and resulted in favour of the visitors by 17 points— 'the scores being Itoalyn, 69 ; Lawranoa, 52. The railway authorities deserve, a word of thanks for their courtesy to the visiting teams, having placed a special carriage for each for their Bole convenience.

On the 21st March the contest for the president of the Oamaru , Club's priza was played on the Meadowbank green, and resulted in it being won by Mr Lamm. In the latter end of March, Mr 6. F Downea, who is wejl known in this part of the colony, was entertained at New Plymouth, where he had been stationed for some time aa manager of the Bank of New South Wales, prior tc his departure for Wanganui. During the evening he was presented with a purse of sovereigns, as a substantial token of the esteem in which he was held by the residents there. In the beginning of April the, secretary of the Bowling Association received a communication from the secretary of the Exhibition Commissioners, asking if the association would make arrangements to hold the annual bowling tournament in Dunedin during the Exhibition on a larger scale than had hitherto been the case, so that probably teams from Victoria, New South Wales, and the North Island might be induced to attend, As I will deal with this communication later on, I have only inserted it here to keep ths necessary sequence) On the 6th of April the return match between the Milton and the Caledonian Clubs was played on the green of the latter, five rinks each side, whenvictory once mpre declared itaelf for the country players, the soor s being : Milton, 100 ; Caledonians, 95. On the same day the Dunedin Club had an alphabetical match amongat themselves, those members whose surnames commenced with any of the letters A to L playing against those whose surnames commenced from Mto Z, The green waa in first clans order and grand play resulted, the scores being : Ato L, 105 ; Mto Z,97. At Napier on the same day a match wa3 played between sides chosen by Messrs Holt and Guy, and resulted in a win for the latter by 11 points. Scores : Holt, 49 ; Gay, 60 Still on the same day, at Chriatchurch, a seven-rink match was played on the green of the Christchurch Club between that club and the Canterbury one, and resulted in rather a hollow victory for the former, the scores being : Ghristchurcb, 195 j Canterbury, 142. On the 13th April the Kaitangata Olub wound up their season with a match between sides chosen by their president and yioi-presi-dontj which resulted in the former winning by 10 points. Scores : President, 56 ; Vice-presi-dent,46. On Good Friday a eiugle rink from the Naseby Olub played a match at Oamaru against each of the local clubs, and pluckily won both, the scores being : Naseby, 22 ; Phoenix, 20} Naseby, 22; Oamaru, 11. It is not every olub which has buco a result as that to show. I observe that one of the " sluitter'ed " team mentioned in my .last notes was amongst the players from' the mining township. The good folks of Rpslyn, highly delighted with the result of their visit to Lawrence in the South, thought they would take a trip northwards at Easter, so after a little correspondence arrangements were completed with the two Oamaru clubs that they should pay them a visit. Wiser tti&n the Caledonians when they journeyed tbitherward, the men of the hills took the train for it instead of the magnificent steamship yclept; the Beautiful Star, and after being most warmly received and, aa a, matter of course, hospitably entertainedj they put the climax on their visit by defeating both of the local clubs. This was too bad ; but ib is a well-known fact that when the Boslyn boys go on the warpath they don't shoot with blank cartridge! every bullet must find its billet, and the scores in these events showed that the visiting team were true of eye and steady of nerve. In the match against the Phoenix Club the result was : Roslyn, 77 j Phoenix, 50; and agaiost the Oamaru Club: Roslyn, 69 ; Oamaru, 47.
