FOOTBALL.
AUCKLAND v. NELSON.
Nelson, September 18.
After a few days' rain the weather cleared this morning, and the Auckland v. Nelson match was played at the Botanical Gardens in the presence of a large number of people. The Nelson team gave a wretched display of football, while the Aucklanders gave the best exhibition of good play seen here. The ground was in fair condition after the rain, and just suited tbe requirements.of a fast team like Auckland, who, though a heavier lot of men than Nelson, did not allow the game to flag for a moment. The visitors were in the pink of condition — evidently determined to carry all before them, and this they did with apparent ease. In the first spell they put together 13 points — Nelson, with one or two exceptions, being kept on the defensive. In the second spell Auckland added 12 more points. Their passing was accurate, their collaring certain, and they worked splendidly together. Warbrick played a grand game, his running being splendid, and he was loudly applauded. Wynyard was remarkable for his running and kicking. Ferris and Masefield both played a sterling game, and Harrold at right half played excellently. It was hard to particularise the forwards. " Snowy " Heffernan, with O'Connor, were frequently to the fore, with M'Lean, Lecky, and Maynyard next in order. Nelson was unfortunate in lacking the services of Bethwaite and Infield. Of backs Bird and Ledger only deserve mention. Harper captained Nelson, who failed to score, Auckland winning by 25 to nil.
