LAND AND WATER
We have reoeived the programme of the events to be competed for at the first championship meeting to be held on the Caledonian grounds on the 14fch of December in connection with the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. The first prize in each event is to be a gold medal, and the second prize a silver medal. Three competitors, however, must start or no second prize will be awarded. A certain standard will be required in each event. The, various events and standards are as follow : — lOOyds flat, standard, 10 l-sf>ec ; one mile flat, 4mi lOsec ; long jump, 20ft ; one mile walk, 7 - > 15sec ; 120 yds hurdle, 17sec ; high jump, 5t :n ; half-mile flat, 2min ssec ; pole jump, 10ft ; three mile walk, 23min ; quartermile flat, 52sec ; putting weight (161b), 35ft; three mile flat, 15min 30sec.
The long distance six-days' raoe of 14 hours a day came to a conclusion at New York on July 9, the scores of the five leading men being as followß :—: — Hughes, 455 miles ; Golden, 404 miles ; Curley, 391 miles ; Sullivan, 384 miles ; and Smith, 303 miles. Hughes' performance beats the previous record for a 14 hours a day walk by 49^miles.
