Tchigorin v. Otto.

(From the Citizen.) We reprint the following game, with notes by Mr Stelnltz, which was played some year's ago by Mr Tchlgorin against Mr Otto. It was a capital example of .the Russian player's style. It was brought under out notice by Mr John Russell, Glasgow. The game is worthy of all the praise bestowel upon it by Mr Steinitz. We take, the liberty, however, to remark that the play suggested for White in note a is not the best actually. It certainly wins most beautifully, bub there is a shorter if less brilliant road to victory by 16 B tks B P eh, mating next move., Mr Steinitz s suggested play delays the mate,, as Black could sacrifice his Queen, cheoking. The best play is always the shortest road to victory. The game abounds in critical situations, and White's play after his 14th move is a succession of brilliant and accurate strategy. The feature of the game is the dexterous manipulation of the Bishops. Mate might also have been given with Rook's Pawn, but no doubt Mr, Tehigorin desired to reward the gallantry of his. two minor pieces by allowing them ( to be the foremost actors "at the death." , Remove White's Q Kb. Another of those strokes of genius in which, Herr Tchigorin's play in general (and this game especially') abounds. c Black has contributed little by errors of judgment towards his opponent's splendid victory. Tak- • it altogether, the present game is one of the finest ( specimens at the odds of a Knight on record.
