After a lot of delay the flag fell to a fair start, when Mantilla ran in front, but at the back of the course Tetford was racing with her, Memorandum and Escutcheon being next. Coming out of the cuttiug Tetford forged ahead, and as they approached the straight looked like a winner, but Escutcheon was soon on even terms with the leader, whilst Mantilla was a length away and looking, dangerous. An interesting race ensued, until at the lawn rails Escutcheon came away and won rather easily by a length and a-half. Time., lmin 45sec. Dividends : Inside, £2 10s ; outside, £2 9s. The flag was lowered to a very bad start, Quilt being fully 10 lengths in the rear, whilst the others were almost in Indian file. Cissy held the lead, and she immediately cut out the running, and never giving her opponents a chance, won easily by two lengths, Dolora being third, about the same distance behind The Bard. Leopold and Hilda were the favourites on the totalisator. Every inch of the way from the half-mile post was fiercely contested by the placed horses, and they entered the straight together, Nelson and Leorina six lengths away being the nearest, hopelessly beaten. From the stand it appeared as if Lady Norah, who was nearest the rails, would win, but Leopold and Hilda, taking their punishment in the gamest manner, fought out the finish with , her, and in the last stride Leopold got his head in front, and won the race, Hilda beating Lady Norah by a head for second place. Artist was first down the hill and cleared the water jump in advance, holding the command round the coarse and down to the double jump, with Guy Fawkes second, the others being close up. Coming down the hill the last time Artist was still in front, but Guy Fawkes took the lead at the entrance to the straight, and it seemed that the race was virtually over, until. TAIERI RACES.

The Taieri Amateur Turf Club should be satisfied with the experiment of > an Autumn race meeting, for a more successful gathering than that held on Monday was never seen on the Taieri. Mr Dowses handicapping pleased owners and puzzled the public; MrGrindley's starting was without reproach, the only muddle of the day being owing entirely to his anxiety to get Seaside away with the others, this mare having previously exhibited temper at the post; and the general arrangements' 'of the club were excellent. The only dispute was in connection with the trot. Believing' as 1 ' do jthat Rose was reasonably checked when she broker-it is not expected that a horse shall be reined in to a dead. standstill—and being persuaded that she lost ground every time she required to be steadied, we' are of opinion that it was 'an error of judgment to uphold the. protest; but the inquiry was patiently' conducted, and if we were not satisfied , with the ruling , it, seemed to meet with the approval of many other witnesses of the facts. The stewards, at any rate, acted in perfect good faith in the matter. Messrs Mason and Roberts worked the totalizator without a hitch, and passed through £2303, of which no less than £431 went on in the Novel Race.
