At the end of two furlongs Cranbrook had drawn 10 lengths clear of Lochiel, who was lying second, with Carbine and Australian Peer next in that order, Abercorn last. Much the same order was maintained until the last four furlongs from home, when Carbine ran up to Loohiel, and Cranbrook had increased his lead. Coming down the straight the two New Zealanders closed on the leader; but Hales noticing Cranbrook in trouble, brought Abercorn along with a rattle, and at the distance had the lead. Here, however, Carbine came again, and desperately fighting every inch of the ran home succeeded in wresting the lead. It was however only momentarily as Hales sat down on Mr White's representative, and then ensued one of the most desperate finishes ever seen on a racecourse, Abercorn getting home a neck in front of the doughty son of Musket.
