WEEKLY STOCK AND PRODUCE MARKETS.
Wedhesday, November 28.
There was no live stock market held this week at Burnside, owing to the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association^ annual show heing held on Wednesday, the regular weekly sale day. Store Cattle.— The continued unseasonable weather prevailing up to the present has very much retarded business in this line t but should a change in the weather for the better set in, we anticipate the demand for this class of stock will be much more Store Sheep.— The market in the meantime is quiet pending Bhearing operations, but as soon as holders are in apposition, to give particulars of the numbers and sorts they have for disposal, we anticipate a satisfactory business will be transacted. Wool.— So much broken weather has prevailed lately that shearing operations have been considerably retarded, and very little wool has so far been received into store. Should the weather clear up, however, it is quite possible to have good catalogues for presentation during the latter end of next month, and^bioh "Mil be early enough for the attendance of outside buyers who may Bp contemplating putting in an appearance at our markets. Judging from the progress of the sales in Melbourne, the market there shows that there is a very healthy feeling prevailing. It is also gratifying to find from recent cablegrams from London that sales have been effected afc from Id advance compared with closing rates of last series ; and, considering the small quantity (viz., 106,000 bales) available for this series, which was to have commenced yesterday, we look forward to a firm market, which will undoubtedly favourably influence proceedings locally. Sheep3kins.-~The demand continues active, and a considerable business is being done in these. While all descriptions are keenly competed for, good combing merinos have the preference". On Monday, the regular weekly sale day, there was a full attendance of buyers, who evinced a keen disposition to operate, all offered being disposed of at full values. The catalogues comprised the usual'.assortraent of dry skins, with a toller compliment of butohera' green. Country dry crossbreda, inferior to medium, brought Is lid to 4s Id ; do do merino. 2s Id to 4s 2d j medium to full-woolled croeebredß, 4s 4d to 6s 6d ; do do merino, 4s 2d to 5s sd : dry pelts, 3d to Is 3d j butohere' green crossbreds, 6s 3d, 5s Id, 5b 9d, 5s 6d, 53 4d, ss, 4s 10d ; do do merino, 5s 6d, 5s 3d,6», 4s 9d, 4s 6d, 4b 3d; green pelts, 16 to 1« Id ; do larftbskius, Is sd, Is 4d, Rabbitsklns,— The market now is getting quite bareof full-furred winter sklnß; the bulk of those offering in the meantime consist of spring and early summer, for all of whioh there Js a very good demand. It Is satisfactory to note that prices all round have adWiced at the sales held in Lqndou ' Iftsfcwegk. ?riyate cablegram? report as follows j-
11 There is a good consumptive demand. Heat descriptions have advanced 2jd per lb, and medium ljd per lb since last report." 'this turn in the Home market will have some effect on operations locally, but being so late in the season will not be so apparent. Hides.— While there are bujers for all coming forward, the market continues quiet, and no improvecan be reported in either demand or values. Prices remMi unaltered, which we give as follows-.— b or inferior and bulls', l£d to lfd; light, 2d to 2Jd; medium, 2|d to 2fd ; heavy, 3d to 3jd ; 601b and over, ia perfect condition, 3Jd per lb. Tallow.— A brisk demand continues to be experienced, all ooraing forward being picked up immediately on arrival; but purchasers are not over confident as to the stability ot the present state of Lhe Home market, and are therefore somewhat unwilling to give prices in sympathy with those cabled from day to day, and until manufacturers stocks are reduced to a lowtr level any advance in values will be slow. We quote prime mutton 22s to 235. good to prime 19s to 2Lb, medium 17s to 19s, Inferior and mixed 15s to 16s 6d ; rough fat (inferior to medium) 12s to 13s, best 13s 6d to 15s per cwt. Grain —Wheat : The market still continues Bhort of prime milling, and particularly Tuscan, which is in strong demand, although a medium-sized parcel would go a long way. Millers are operating freely, dealers in inferior and medium are also purchasing ; all sorts are in consequence easily placed. We quote crime milling velvet and Tuscan 4s 7d to 4s, 9d, cood to prime 4* 3d to 4s 6d, inferior and medium 3s 6d to 4s, broken 2s 9d to 3s 3d (ex store, sacks weighed in). Oats: The demand continues exceedingly brisk, and since last reporting are from 9i to Is per bushel higher, and it is geuorally surmised that within the next few days a further rise will be experienced. There are ve^y few indeed coming in or to come in, and nearly all those now arriving were previously, disposed of. The stock now on hand is extremely fight, and, considering the poor prospects for the Australian harvest, a stronger demand and of necessity higher priceß are almost certain to rule later on. We quote prime milling at 4a l§d to 4s 3d ; best short feed, 3s lid to 4s Id ? medium. 3s 9d to 3s lOd (ex store, sacks weighed in).— Barley: A moderate demand exists, chiefly for shipment. Beßt, 3fd to 4Jd ; medium, 3d to 3Jd per lb. Potatoes.— For old the market is easier, owing to an increased supply. At auction on Tuesday £1 1 7s 6dwas top price.
